What are safety tapes?

Safety tapes are adhesive products designed to highlight hazards and improve visibility in the workplace. The purpose of safety tapes (also known as hazard tapes and caution tapes) is to alert people to potentially dangerous areas or conditions.

Safety tapes help businesses comply with work health and safety (WHS) regulations. Safety tapes can be applied to floors, aisles, walls, vehicles, and doors, reducing risk in places like construction sites and warehouses.

At Stylus Tapes, we’re proud to be Australia’s leading adhesive tape expert, providing high-quality safety tapes for industrial and commercial use. With decades of Australia-wide experience and industry knowledge, we have a dedicated customer base built on a foundation of trusted and reliable products at competitive prices.

What are the different types of safety tapes?

We offer a range of safety tapes to suit diverse workplace safety needs. Each product serves a different function, helping keep your team safe in warehouses and other industrial environments.

1. Antislip tape and mats

Heavy-duty antislip tape and mats are essential for improving safety in areas where slips, trips, and falls are possible. They provide reliable grip and traction.

Antislip tape

Stylus 2660 Antislip Tape and its 4.5m retail packed equivalent is a tough and durable solution designed to provide a non-slip surface for locations such as stairways, access ramps, ladders, industrial machinery, and automotive running boards.

It features heavy-duty aluminium oxide grit, ensuring excellent slip resistance and long-lasting performance. These tapes conform to AS4586 for slip resistance on pedestrian surface materials.

Features:

  • Resistant to water, mild alkaline and acidic solutions.
  • UV-stable, high-tack acrylic adhesive.
  • Suitable for indoor and outdoor applications.
  • Available in a range of colours, including black, red, yellow, fluoro yellow, and black/yellow.

Antislip mats

Antislip mats are standalone products designed for long-term use in high-risk areas. They have a wider protective surface area than antislip tape and are available with a ‘watch your step’ message, reflective strip, or glow strip for additional visibility.

Stylus 2660 Antislip Mats can be placed in specific zones where slips and falls are a concern. Simply place them where you want them. There’s no need for an adhesive as the adhesive is on the mats. (Believe us when we say it won’t come off!)

Available in three styles:

  • Watch Your Step (black and yellow): A clear warning for general safety hazards and suitable for ramps, stairs, and walkways.
    • Glow Strip (black): Enhances visibility in low-light conditions. Their high-visibility quality makes them valuable safety additions during emergencies.
  • Reflective (black): Features diamond-grade reflective tape to provide high reflectivity under light, suitable for environments with variable lighting.

Use them to mark dangers on construction sites, in public spaces, in warehouses, and anywhere else you need to post a safety warning.

6. Reflective tapes

Reflective tapes are used whenever high-intensity reflection is required. They are especially useful for enhancing visibility and safety in low-light or night time conditions.

Reflective tapes are extremely adaptable and can stick to fabric, metal, and concrete. They are used to:

  • Mark road hazards.
  • Increase visibility on trucks, cars, bikes, motorcycles, tractors, and other vehicles.
  • Define steps and edges to prevent trips and falls.
  • Highlight water safety equipment, like life jackets and paddles.
  • Add visibility at night (for example, on your pet’s collar for safer nighttime walks).
  • Mark low doorways to prevent head injuries.

Available in three styles:

  • Solid reflective tapes: Highly reflective, waterproof, self-adhesive film that isn’t damaged by water or chemicals. It’s made with an acrylic adhesive and is suitable for use on vehicles, road markings, signage and many other safety applications. Available in a variety of colours.
  • Chevron reflective tape: Similar to the solid reflective tapes, but with a distinct chevron pattern for reflective signage on cars, buses, and trucks. It’s highly reflective, waterproof, and self-adhesive with excellent corrosion and solvent resistance.
  • Reflective tape retail range: The same great reflective material as the solid reflective tapes, but in a retail-packed and barcoded roll that retail stores can easily sell. It’s perfect for people who want to buy just a bit of reflective film for their projects, and it has the same high qualities that resist water and solvents.

Our reflective tapes range are all Class 1 tapes suitable for high-intensity reflective signage and vehicle applications. They meet the following accreditations:

  • AS1906.1 2017
  • Class 400

Safety tapes: what do I need to know?

Safety types have a wide variety of applications, and they are critical components of safety compliance in the workplace. When choosing safety tapes for your business, here are a few things you should know.

Store safety tapes in a cool, dry environment

It is important to store safety tapes properly. If they get wet or too damp, it can damage the tape’s adhesive quality.

Although storage is important, once applied, many of these tapes can withstand heavy industrial use and harsh weather conditions.

Safety tapes help keep your team safe

The main application for safety tapes is reducing risk, alerting people to potentially dangerous areas, highlighting hazardous conditions, and improving visibility.

Safety tapes help businesses comply with work health and safety (WHS) regulations.

We offer a wide range of safety tapes for different applications

Whether you need tape with reflective, antislip, or visible markings, we have a wide range of durable, quality safety tapes to choose from. Check out our product catalogue for more information.

FAQs

How do you apply safety tape?

Refer to the product for specific application instructions, but as a general guide, here’s how to apply safety tape:

  1. Prepare the surface. Make sure it is clean and free from oil and dust. Wash with soap and water to guarantee a solid bond, then wipe with isopropyl alcohol. Allow to dry completely.
  2. Measure and cut the tape to the size required.
  3. Apply the tape. Remove the backing and press the tape onto the surface. Avoid touching the sticky side to ensure the best adhesion.
  4. Apply pressure. Place the tape down with your fingertips to ensure it sticks firmly. Once the tape is down, use a squeegee to apply moderate to firm pressure to secure it.
  5. Trim as needed. If applying tape over rivets or seams, trim the tape with a razor blade to achieve a clean finish.
  6. Allow to cure. For best adherence, let the tape cure for at least 48 hours before subjecting it to high or cold temperatures.
