We supply a full range of professional-grade gaffer tapes trusted across the audio, visual, and entertainment industries. Our tapes are strong, heat-resistant, and easy to remove without residue. They’re ideal for cable management, stage setups, marking, sealing, and quick repairs.
Stylus Tapes is the home of Australia’s AV and entertainment industry favourite gaffer tape, Nashua 357.
Whether you need black gaffer tape for film and theatre or bright colours for marking out stages or sets, we’ve got options for every setting. Our range includes neon, fluro, matte, and delicate-surface gaffer tapes, all available for bulk orders through our national wholesale distributor network.
Gaffer tape overview
Gaffer tape is made with a strong, woven PE-coated cloth backing and rubber adhesive that provides a secure hold and lifts without residue. Its matte finish also resists heat and light reflection, so it’s perfect for use under bright lighting or on camera.
How is gaffer tape used?
Gaffer tape’s versatility makes it a useful tool commonly used in film, theatre, events, and the trades.Â
Gaffer tape is an ideal option for:
- Securing cables and carpets for OHS compliance
- Marking floors, cameras, and stage zones
- Colour coding and temporary labelling
- Holding and sealing materials in industrial settings
- Temporary protection for delicate surfaces
What is the difference between gaffer tape and duct tape?
Although they may be spoken about interchangeably, gaffer and duct tape are very different tapes. The confusion comes from the fact that gaffer tape in Australia is called duct tape in the USA. Here is an overview of how they compare:
| Feature | Gaffer tape | Duct tape |
| Backing | Cloth (matte finish) | PVC (gloss finish) |
| Adhesive | Rubber-based, clean removal | High-tack (leaves residue) |
| Surface safety | Safe on delicate or painted surfaces | Made for industrial or general use |
| Purpose | Stage, film, events, temporary fixes | Repairs, sealing, long-lasting fixes |
| Heat and light | Handles heat and has a non-reflective finish | May reflect light under studio conditions |
We supply a complete range of both gaffer and duct tapes, giving you the flexibility to choose the option that best fits your requirements.
Factors to consider when buying gaffer tape
When stocking up on gaffer tape, a few key details will help you choose the right type for your project. Here’s what you need to know:
- Grade: Professional-grade tape offers the most adhesion, while still providing a clean removal. (Our entire range is professional grade.)Â
- Coat weight: The adhesive thickness determines holding strength. A heavier coat will suit tougher applications. The Nashua 357 is our thickest option at 330 μm.
- Finish: Matte tapes prevent glare under lighting, while bright neon colours are easy to see for marking or labelling.
- Adhesive type: Natural rubber-based adhesives provide secure bonding with residue-free removal. (All our gaffer tape options are rubber-based.)Â
- Supplier reputation: Make sure to get your supplies from a company with a great local reputation. We are trusted throughout Australia for our quality products, high stock levels, wholesale prices, bulk order options and fast delivery.

FAQs
Is gaffer tape waterproof?
Due to the heavy cotton cloth backing, gaffer tape is water-resistant but not waterproof. It can handle some moisture, so it can be used outdoors or in damp environments, but it won’t fully block out water over extended periods.
If you need complete waterproofing, other adhesive tapes (like our Cyclone 349 Cloth tape) might be a better option.
Can gaffer tape be used as electrical tape?
Although gaffer tape is versatile, it shouldn’t be used as a replacement for electrical tape. Our electrical tape is specially made to insulate electrical wires and withstand high voltages. For electrical applications, it’s best to use tapes designed for that purpose to ensure safety and durability.
Can I use gaffer tape for floor marking?
Yes, gaffer tape works well as a floor marking tape, especially in event spaces or studios. Choose matte black for low visibility or fluorescent tape for high-contrast marking.
