Stylus Tapes Reflective Tapes

Reflective tape, or retroreflective tape, is helpful for many essential activities. It can reflect light back to its source, enhancing visibility and safety, especially in low-light or nighttime conditions.

Numerous industries use it due to its safety applications, including state and federal transportation organisations, and it also has plenty of applications for personal use.

Use Stylus Tapes’s range of reflective tapes to increase visibility and safety. Check out our selection of premium reflective adhesive tapes, and get in touch with our team to experience the difference for yourself.

What is reflective tape?

Reflective tape works by bouncing light back to its source. This is made possible by its material makeup, which consists of tens of thousands of tiny glass beads or prisms. When these beads come into contact with light, they effectively reflect it to the observer, giving a vibrant visual warning. That’s why sometimes it can also be referred to as ‘warning tape.’

Stylus’s reflective tapes range are all Class 1 tapes suitable for high-intensity reflective signage and vehicle applications and meet the following accreditations:

  • AS1906.1 2017
  • Class 400

What are the different types of reflective tape?

When evaluating different kinds of reflective tape, two main factors to consider are the class and the material type.

Class 1 reflective tape is used when high-intensity reflection is required. It is effective day and night and is regularly used for vehicle marking, construction sites, high-traffic roads, and highlighting hazardous areas. Class 2, on the other hand, is often a cheaper option, ideal for less critical applications.

Reflective tape is so effective because of its unique material makeup. It’s most commonly composed of tiny glass beads, making it easier to produce. However, it can also be made with micro prisms for a stronger reflection, as seen in diamond grade tape.

At Stylus Tapes, we have three varieties on offer:

  • Solid reflective tapes: This is a highly reflective, waterproof, self-adhesive film that isn’t damaged by water or chemicals. It’s made with an acrylic adhesive and is suitable for use on vehicles, road markings, signage and many other safety applications. This tape is also available in a wide variety of colours.
  • Chevron reflective tape: The chevron version is just like the regular reflective film but has a distinct chevron pattern. It’s highly reflective, waterproof, and self-adhesive with excellent corrosion and solvent resistance.
  • Reflective tape retail range: This is the same great reflective material, but it comes in a retail-packed and barcoded roll that stores can easily sell. It’s perfect for people who want to buy just a bit of reflective film for their projects, and it has the same high qualities that resist water and solvents.

What is reflective tape used for?

Reflective tape is extremely versatile and has many potential uses. It’s an essential piece of equipment for roadways, vehicles, and other workplaces, but it also lends itself to many applications around the house, garage, and farm.

Because of its extreme adaptability, it can stick to fabric, metal, and concrete. Wherever you need more visibility, reflective tape is the way to go. A few typical applications are:

  1. Road hazards: Mark big objects near roads to prevent accidents.
  2. Work machinery: Mark dangerous parts of machines in warehouses or factories.
  3. Bikes and motorcycles: Make your ride safer by adding tape to the back.
  4. Walkways: Use anti slip products and safety signs on stairs, sidewalks or fences to help people see where they’re going.
  5. Steps and edges: Use it to mark sudden drops or rises so people don’t trip.
  6. Low doorways: Stick it on low-hanging objects to prevent head bumps.
  7. Water gear: Put special water-safe tape on boats, life jackets, and paddles.
  8. Farm equipment: Make tractors and other farm vehicles easier to spot.
  9. Pet gear: Put tape on your pet’s collar for safer night walks.
  10. Mailboxes: Help drivers and mail carriers see your mailbox at night.

Is reflective tape waterproof?

Reflective tape can be waterproof, but this depends on the product. It comes in various forms that are weather-resistant and outdoor-use friendly, so it won’t deteriorate from rain or moisture.

What is the difference between reflective and retroreflective tape?

Reflective tape and retroreflective tape essentially refer to the same product, although the terms reflective and retroreflective have two distinct meanings. It all depends on how the light behaves when coming into contact with the material.

Regular reflective materials will reflect light but scatter the particles in various directions. Retroreflective materials, on the other hand, will reflect the light to its source on a parallel path. This is extremely important for granting the tape clear visibility over a large distance.

How do you apply reflective tape?

Use these procedures to apply reflective tape efficiently:

  1. Prepare the surface: Make sure the surface is clear of impurities like oil or grime, dry, and clean. Wash with soap and water to guarantee a solid bond, then wipe with isopropyl alcohol.

  1. Measure and cut: After determining the required length of tape, cut a strip off the roll. Do not remove more layers than you can manage at once.

  1. Apply the tape: After removing the backing, press the tape onto the surface. Keep your hands off the sticky side. Place it down with your fingertips to make sure it sticks firmly.

  1. Use a squeegee: Apply moderate pressure initially, then increase it to push down on the tape to secure it firmly.

  1. Trim as needed: When placing tape over rivets or seams, trim the tape with a razor blade to achieve a clean finish.

  1. Curing time: For best adherence, let the tape cure for at least 48 hours before subjecting it to high or cold temperatures.
