The Ultimate Guide To Waterproof Tapes

Water-resistant tapes are important tools for preventing water damage to your projects and products. They provide a moisture-resistant seal using specific adhesives like natural rubber or butyl.

Water-resistant tapes are multipurpose. They can be used for a wide variety of all-weather applications, such as sealing, joining, waterproofing, and vibration dampening.

Not all tapes are fully waterproof. Different tapes provide varying degrees of water repellence, so it is important to choose the right tape for your project.

  • Water-resistant tapes: These tapes are weather-resistant. They can be used and stored outside, which makes them ideal for industries like construction.
  • Waterproofing tapes: These tapes can be used to waterproof things, providing a barrier that helps prevent air, dust, moisture, or water from entering gaps. (Ideal for the automotive and HVAC industry, for example.)
  • Waterproof tape: These tapes are waterproof, and they maintain their properties even when submerged in water. (They are widely used in the marine industry.)

Let’s explore different water-resistant tapes to find the one that best meets your needs.

Water-resistant tapes

Water-resistant tapes can be exposed to rain, and are therefore suitable for a variety of different purposes that can have an outdoor application.

  • PVC safety marking tape: This tough, PVC film-coated tape is water-resistant and has an aggressive rubber adhesive. It’s ideal for marking outdoor areas (sporting court lines, for example) or high-use areas (like warehouses and shops). It comes in a variety of colours and is ideal for industries like packaging and warehousing, audio, hardware and retail, and safety.
  • Automotive masking tapes: These tapes are ideal for jobs in professional automotive body shops and industrial and commercial painting applications. They are designed to prevent paint bleed-through with water and solvent based paints. Automotive masking tapes are resistant to high temperatures, moisture, and UV, and remove cleanly and easily.
  • Cloth tape: General purpose cloth tape (that isn’t waterproof or used for waterproofing) is suitable for a wide range of everyday applications, such as sealing and joining, general repair, and cord protection in exhibition and conference centres. It adheres to most surfaces, can be torn by hand, and comes in a variety of colours.
  • Heavy duty protection tapes: These multipurpose tapes (like PE protection tape and PVC protection tape) provide adherence to indoor and outdoor surfaces like aluminium, glass, stainless steel, powder coatings, and other metal surfaces (including aluminium window frame protection and balustrade and metal profile protection). They are UV and water-resistant, creating a barrier film for moisture and vapour. These easy to apply tapes have excellent conformability and remove cleanly.
  • Outdoor painters masking tapes: These universal tapes can be applied to a multitude of indoor and outdoor surfaces and are useful for projects that require long-term masking and clean removal, and/or the prevention of bleed-through from water and solvent based paints. Some have a 14-day removal rating, ideal for construction and commercial use, as well as DIY projects. Others are longer term, with a 60-day removal rating, suitable for smooth and delicate surfaces and offering sharp, clean lines.
  • PE shrink tapes: These white medium and high density UV-resistant shrink tapes are used for a wide variety of sealing, joining, and patching applications. They provide protection around window and door frames, temporarily mask outdoor surfaces, and are useful for patching outdoor polyethylene sheeting and tarps. These tapes are PVC free and better for the environment, and they are also suitable for greenhouse repair and agricultural bagging.

When choosing a water-resistant tape, it’s also useful to consider these factors:

  1. Adhesive strength: Ensure the tape will stick firmly to the intended area or surface for a successful seal.
  2. Temperature resistance: Choose a tape suitable for the application’s temperature range.
  3. UV resistance: If the tape will be used outside, pick one that won’t be affected by exposure to sunlight.

Waterproofing tapes

Waterproofing tapes create a waterproof seal, essentially waterproofing an area through the application of tape.

These tapes are also water-resistant, and suitable for a variety of different purposes that have an outdoor application.

  • Butyl rubber tape: This flexible, multipurpose tape bonds to rough and uneven surfaces, providing an airtight and watertight barrier that does not dry out like other adhesives, ensuring a permanent seal. It’s ideal for a variety of all weather applications, such as sealing, joining, waterproofing, and vibration dampening. Suitable for industries like construction, automotive, plumbing, and food and beverage.
  • Foil tape: Also known as HVAC tape, this tape is made with aluminium foil coated with a butyl rubber adhesive with a blue PE liner. It is resistant to heat and moisture and is frequently used to seal joints in metal roofing and ductwork.
  • Self-fusing silicone tape: This tape is made from a self-amalgamating silicone compound with a cellophane liner. When stretched, it creates a watertight and airtight seal, ideal for repairing and sealing broken pipes and hoses. This tape adheres back onto itself, doesn’t leave any sticky residue, and removes cleanly.
  • Foam tapes: Certain foam tapes have waterproofing properties. These compressible tapes have many applications. They’re often used in gasketing and weatherstripping, or for sound and shock absorption. They provide a superior airtight and watertight seal.
    • Single sided closed cell foam tape has sealing attributes that help prevent air, dust, moisture, or water from entering gaps. This tape also dampens noise and vibration, and is ideal for sealing doors, covers and lids.
    • Double sided closed cell foam tape has similar properties to single sided closed cell foam tape, but it also has an aggressive acrylic adhesive suitable for lightweight indoor and outdoor mounting applications.
    • High bond foam tapes are suitable for bonding a range of materials, both inside and outside, adhering to surfaces like glass and metals, while providing a permanent seal against water, air, and moisture.

Waterproof tapes

Waterproof tapes are as advertised – they are waterproof. They are designed to be submerged in a body of water (for example, reflective tape on a boat) and still perform.

These tapes are also water-resistant, and suitable for a variety of different purposes that have an outdoor application.

  • Waterproof gaffer tape: This tape is the industry standard in the entertainment field, known for being strong, waterproof, and easy to use. It’s hand-tearable, removes cleanly, and sticks to a wide variety of surfaces. Professionals love using it on production sets (securing cables, leads, and carpets), as naming tape on consoles, and in theatres and concert halls.
  • PE coated cloth tapes: The PE coating on these cloth tapes repels water, which makes them waterproof. If you need tape that is extra thick and strong, the ultra heavy duty waterproof cloth tape is what you’re looking for. It’s ideal for challenging jobs in tough industries (like marine, farming, and mining), and is used for repairs, seals, joins, and bundles. Heavy duty waterproof cloth tape is also incredibly useful, with similar properties and suitable for a wide range of everyday applications like general repair and maintenance.
  • Nano tape: This washable and reusable, double sided clear tape adheres to a wide range of surfaces, such as marble, tiles, glass, metal, plastic, and more. It can be used indoors or outside to secure attachments like shelves and picture frames; it can also be used as an antislip device.
  • Reflective tape: This tape is waterproof and highly reflective. It’s also resistant to solvents and corrosion, making it ideal for marine, construction, mining, and packaging industries.
  • Magnetic tape: This useful tape is flexible, durable, and waterproof. The white PVC top layer can be written on with permanent marker, which makes it useful for labelling, identification, and general use in homes, offices, and warehouses

What are water-resistant tapes used for?

Water-resistant tapes repel water to varying degrees. Some tapes offer temporary adhesion by creating a barrier between it and the water. They also solve flow problems with moisture and airflow in the building envelope, such as doors, windows, and nail holes.

Water-resistant, waterproofing, and waterproof tapes:

  • Seal off areas from water: They protect surfaces that shouldn’t be wet.
  • Fix leaks: They seal gaps in pipelines, swimming pools, and other areas that are often moving.
  • Protect wires: When wrapped around electrical connections, these tapes can keep water out, shielding your electrical equipment from short circuits and keeping it safe.
  • Repair outdoor gear: These tapes can patch tears in tents, tarps, backpacks, and jackets.
  • Are useful in emergencies: If something breaks or leaks unexpectedly, these tapes are great temporary remedies until a proper repair can be done.
  • Have a number of other applications: These tapes can be used for auto repairs and building projects. They work well in damp places like kitchens and bathrooms, and can also be used in an industrial setting that requires personal protective equipment (PPE).

Exploring popular water-resistant tapes

Not only do we have a wide range of waterproof tape options, we also have decades of experience and expert knowledge to answer your tape questions.

Is duct tape waterproof?

Duct tape is not waterproof, but it is heavily water-resistant.

Standard PVC-based duct tape, made from polyethylene fibres, provides significant water resistance, particularly on non-porous surfaces. Its resilience makes it ideal for temporary repairs and sealing applications in demanding environments.

PVC-free duct tape doesn’t offer the same level of water resistance.

Pros:

  • Adaptable and multipurpose.
  • Indoor and outdoor use.
  • Strong adhesion.

Cons:

  • Can leave a sticky residue when removed.
  • Not waterproof.

Is gaffer tape waterproof?

Some gaffer tapes (like Nashua 357 Professional Gaffer Tape, the entertainment industry standard) are waterproof. Most other gaffer tapes are not entirely waterproof, but they can withstand some moisture.

Gaffer tapes’ PE backed cotton cloth material is designed to be sensitive to pressure. It can be removed without leaving any residue behind, which is helpful for tasks requiring spotless surfaces.

It is used throughout the entertainment industry (theatre, film, television, and recording), and also for industrial, construction, and heavy-duty applications.

Pros:

  • Strong adhesion.
  • No sticky residue.
  • Easily tearable by hand.

Cons:

  • Most are water-resistant, not waterproof.
  • [TC]

Is electrical tape waterproof?

Electrical tape is not waterproof. Despite being a good insulator for wiring, it will not protect electrical wires from water damage. When electrical tape gets wet, it loses its elasticity, and the rubber adhesive loses strength.

The exception here is self-fusing silicone tape, which can be used for waterproofing.

Otherwise, do not use electrical tape to cover wires that may come into contact with water or liquids, as it won’t offer any protection.

Pros:

  • Highly flexible,
  • Great insulation features.
  • Sticks well to various surfaces.

Cons:

  • It can leave a sticky residue.
  • Most are water-resistant, not waterproof.

Is packing tape waterproof?

Although it can withstand some moisture, packing tape (also referred to as packaging tape) is only lightly water-resistant, much less waterproof.

Packaging tape is mostly used for box sealing, and comprises plastic film with a pressure-sensitive adhesive.

Pros:

  • Great for securing packages.
  • Comes in eco-friendly options.
  • Hi tack adhesive provides an instant bond.

Cons:

  • Can lose adhesion when exposed to extreme temperature ranges.
  • Lightly water-resistant, not waterproof.

Is masking tape waterproof?

Generally speaking, masking tape is not waterproof, as it’s made from crepe paper. Its most common uses include light-duty applications, painting tasks, and temporary labelling where clean removal is essential.

However, some specialised outdoor painters masking tapes are water-resistant and they will temporarily protect areas. Certain automotive masking tapes are also water-resistant.

Pros:

  • Creates sharp, clean lines.
  • Minimal residue when removed.
  • Outdoor masking tapes prevent bleed-through from water and solvent based paints.

Cons:

  • Limited adhesion strength.
  • Generally speaking, does not work well in wet environments.

How to apply waterproof tape

Step 1: Surface preparation

Use the right cleanser (detergent, water, abrasive pads, wire brushes, or solvents) to remove moisture, oil, and grime. To achieve optimal adherence, rinse well and dry completely. It is recommended that smooth areas be roughened to ensure good adhesion.

Step 2: Cut the tape

Determine the length of tape needed for the application. Using scissors, cut the tape straight to ensure it fits the area without being too long.

Step 3: Apply the tape

Ensure the surface is dry, then place the tape over the desired area. Press it down evenly and firmly to prevent creases or bubbles. Proceed from one end and work your way to the other side. If you’re working in critical areas, add multiple layers.

Step 4: Overlap the edges

If you’re using multiple strips, overlap the edges by at least 1.27cm to improve waterproofing and stop leaks. For the best results, apply the tape to both sides of the sealed area. Avoid repositioning once it’s in place.

Step 5: Smooth the tape

Use a roller or squeegee and apply firm pressure with your fingertips to remove wrinkles or air pockets. If you’re working on porous surfaces, use a hair dryer.

How to remove waterproof tape

Step 1: Heat the tape

Heat is the trick to removing waterproof tape. Set a hairdryer to medium or low heat and use it on the tape, maintaining a distance of approximately 10 to 15cm between the tape and hairdryer. Swing it back and forth for 30 to 60 seconds. The heat will help soften the adhesive.

Step 2: Remove the tape

Remove the tape one edge at a time. Use your fingers or pliers for a better grip. Peel at a 45-degree angle to avoid scratching the underlying surface. If resistance occurs, apply heat again before continuing.

Step 3: Remove any residue

Some tapes might leave sticky residue behind once the tape has been removed. There are a few ways to remove this. Try dipping a cloth in rubbing alcohol, acetone, or commercial adhesive remover, and carefully massage the area. Let it set for a minute, and then remove it with a small amount of WD-40. Finish up by gently cleaning the area with a clean towel soaked in warm, soapy water.

FAQs

How long does waterproof tape last?

The average lifespan of waterproof tapes is five to 10 years, after which strong adhesive tapes begin to break down. However, physical strain and environmental factors (like temperature swings and direct exposure to sunlight) can shorten a tape’s lifespan.

What is the best type of waterproof tape for sealing leaks in a roof?

Waterproof silicone or butyl rubber tapes are excellent choices for sealing roof leaks. Choose a durable tape with adhesive that is strong enough to endure five years or more in the sun. Ideal tapes will conform to various shapes and stick well to common roofing materials, like metal, EPDM, and TPO.

What is the difference between waterproof and weatherproof tape?

Waterproof tape lives up to its name. It is fully waterproof, designed to withstand submersion in water and prevent moisture from penetrating surfaces. It is ideal for industries like marine and plumbing.

Weatherproof tape is water-resistant. It can be used or stored outdoors, withstanding various weather conditions like dampness and rain. It is not fully waterproof, however. Weatherproof tape is frequently used to seal gaps around doors and windows.

Can waterproof tape be reused?

Certain waterproof tape types, like nano tape, can be washed and reused. With careful handling, it is possible to realign certain double-sided waterproof tapes. Always refer to the manufacturer’s instructions for precise storage and reuse advice to guarantee efficacy.
