The right way to apply adhesive tape

Applying adhesive tape is a straightforward, four-step process.

Step 1: Evaluate the surface

Adhesive tapes work best on clean, dry, and sealed surfaces. Before you apply the tape, start by inspecting the surface. Is it smooth or porous? Oily or dusty?

Look for any of the following:

  • Dust, dirt, or fibres
  • Moisture, oil, or chemicals
  • Release agents on plastics
  • Flaking paint or corrosion.

If any of these are present, it’s worth tidying them up before applying your adhesive tape.

Tip: Porous materials like brick, wood, or concrete may need sealing first.

Step 2: Clean the surface

Use isopropyl alcohol (IPA) and a clean, lint-free cloth to wipe the surface just before you apply the tape. (Don’t reuse dirty rags as they can transfer contamination.)

Avoid using cleaning solutions that might react with the surface. It’s always best practice to test a small area first. Make sure any painted or sealed surfaces are fully cured and dry before taping.

Step 3: Apply the tape

Once your surface is ready, it’s time to apply the tape.

  1. Take your time. It’s important to avoid touching the adhesive side with your fingers, as they’ll transfer natural oils to the tape. Work slowly and methodically for the best results.
  2. Apply the tape. Make sure to apply firm, even pressure as you lay down the tape. The temperature should be above 10°C during application. (Use gentle heat if needed.) If you’re working with double-sided tapes, press again after bonding both surfaces.
  3. Tidy up the edges. Make sure to focus on the edges and uneven surfaces during application. They require more pressure to ensure adhesion.
  4. Allow 24 to 72 hours for full strength. Adhesion improves over time. It may take a few days for adhesion to reach full strength, depending on the product.

Step 4: Store your tape correctly

After you’ve applied your adhesive tape, it’s important to store it correctly. Proper storage of adhesive tape can significantly extend its shelf life and ensure it performs as expected when it’s time to use it again.

Store your tape in a cool, dry area, away from dust, moisture, and direct sunlight. This extends shelf life and keeps performance consistent. When not in use, return tape rolls to their original protective packaging.

How to choose the correct adhesive tape

Certain surfaces require specialised adhesives. If you choose the wrong tape for the surface type, even perfect prep can’t save you.
