Three expert tips for storing adhesive tape

Adhesive tape is straightforward to store. Following our three expert tips will ensure your tape is as good as new when it comes time to use it.

1. Store adhesive tape in its original packaging

Whenever possible, keep rolls in their original box or plastic wrap until you’re ready to use them.

Why this matters:

  • It protects tape from dust, UV light, and moisture
  • It prevents pressure or warping
  • It keeps product labels and batch codes intact

If you have removed the tape from its packaging, store rolls flat (not upright) on a clean surface to avoid edge damage.

2. Choose a cool, dry, and dark storage area

Adhesive tape should be stored:

  • At 15°C to 22°C
  • With 40% to 50% relative humidity
  • Out of direct sunlight or fluorescent lighting
  • Away from heaters, windows, or high-moisture areas

This is especially critical for natural rubber and hotmelt adhesives, which are more prone to degradation in heat or cold.

3. Avoid cold storage (unless specified)

Tapes left in cold environments (especially under 10°C) may temporarily lose their stick.

Why? The adhesive (especially hotmelt) becomes too viscous to flow and ‘wet out’ the surface.

This is common in Australia’s colder months (June to August). For best results, let the tape warm to room temperature before applying.

How long to store your tape

Adhesive tape does have a use-by date. To ensure maximum performance, use tape within six to 12 months of receiving it.

This is especially important if the tape is:

  • A specialty product
  • Exposed to extreme conditions during storage
  • Opened and partially used

Some tapes last longer, but it’s always best to check the product’s technical data sheet or speak with one of our experts if unsure.

Avoid these three common storage mistakes

❌ Leaving tape rolls on window sills or in hot vans.

❌ Exposing tapes to warehouse dust or solvent fumes.

❌ Forgetting open rolls in high-humidity areas.
